Department Summary: The Lead Accountant serves as a critical member of the accounting team, leading complex financial reporting and compliance activities. Key responsibilities include NCAA reporting, audit coordination, lease and SBITA accounting, prepaid account management, cash reconciliations, and the training and oversight of internal award processes to ensure compliance with university policies and regulations.

Position Profile: Responsible for a large accounting function. Performs accounting functions for highly complex financial accounts such as analyzing, monitoring, reconciling, and reporting financial information. Prepares reports, financial statements, and processes other requests for internal and external accounting and auditing. May include activities relating to developing, implementing, and monitoring accounting systems, policies and procedures. Oversees financial reporting, audits, and internal controls to maintain fiscal integrity. Provides strategic financial planning, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources. Assists external auditors, as required. Reviews accounts to ensure data integrity.

Level Summary: Regularly serves as a technical leader, expert, or program manager for complex functions or initiatives that require deep subject‑matter knowledge. Significantly impacts the department by directly contributing to its performance and success.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides leadership to projects or initiatives. May have a limited number of direct reports.

Fiscal Responsibilities: May be responsible for budget for projects or initiatives.

Problem Solving: Leads problem‑solving efforts across various challenges.

Independence of Action: Operates with high autonomy and is trusted to make decisions.

Communication and Collaboration: Frequently collaborates cross‑functionally and represents the team in meetings and internal and external stakeholders. Influences decision‑making.

Physical Requirements: This role is primarily desk‑based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or in a related field and 8 or more years of related professional experience, or equivalent education and experience. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and accounting practices required.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, Teams. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Ability to work collaboratively. Data analysis experience.

Pay Rate: The target salary range for this position is $58,972 to $78,139. The salary negotiated at the time of offer will be commensurate with education and experience while also considering internal equity.
