Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in Berkeley, CA is seeking a Senior Accelerator Safety System Engineer to lead the safety systems for ALS, BELLA, and related facilities. You will guide engineers and technicians, coordinate with RPG and RP groups, and ensure compliance with DOE orders, LBNL policies, and IEC safety standards.

This role focuses on designing, implementing, testing, and certifying interlock systems, analyzing existing safety architectures, and supporting upgrades such as ALS-U.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering and 10+ years of relevant safety-system design experience.
• Hands-on experience designing and programming safety-rated PLC-based systems.
• Experience with safety lifecycle standards (IEC 61508/61511) and reliability methods (HAZOP/LOPA/FMEA).

Responsibilities

• Develop ALS-U safety systems and ensure compliance with codes and LBNL policies.
• Oversee interlock and safety system implementation for accelerators and lasers.
• Plan safety projects with cost estimates, budgets, and procurement.
• Create system requirements and test procedures; certify installed systems.
• Lead design reviews and safety-system certification with RPG/RP groups.
• Collaborate across teams and mentor engineers and technicians.
