Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks a Senior Accelerator Safety System Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and verification of safety interlock systems for ALS-U and related facilities.

You will guide a team of engineers and technicians, ensure compliance with DOE and IEC standards, and drive safety lifecycle activities from concept through certification. This role is based at Berkeley Lab and involves collaboration across divisions and external partners.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience taking software-based safety systems from specification through validation and field commissioning.
• Experience designing and programming safety-rated PLC-based systems (ladder logic, function block, or IEC 61131-3).
• Knowledge of safety lifecycle and functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508, IEC 61511).
• Experience with reliability/safety analysis techniques (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA).

Responsibilities

• Develop safety systems for ALS-U project and study applicable codes, standards, and DOE orders.
• Oversee technical implementation for interlock and safety systems at LBNL facilities.
• Plan and complete safety system projects with estimates, budgets, and procurement.
• Generate system requirements and collaborate with RPG on safety reviews.
• Program and certify safety-rated PLC controllers and beam-loss safety electronics.
• Coordinate design reviews and certification with engineering teams.
• Maintain documentation of interlock systems, schematics, and manuals.
• Interface with field teams to resolve reliability issues and train personnel.
• Lead and mentor engineers, technicians, and support staff.
