Job summary

Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District in Waverly, Iowa seeks an energetic Head 8th Grade Boys Track Coach for the middle school program. The role is an extra-curricular stipend position, reporting to the Athletic Director and Building Principal.

You will enforce policies, schedule practices, oversee facilities, and mentor assistants while promoting student-athlete growth. You will mentor athletes academically and athletically, manage equipment and safety, and support post-secondary

Qualifications

• Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement (BOEE) required.
• Current CPR/AED, Concussion in Sports, and Heat Illness Prevention certifications.
• Strong knowledge of sport-specific rules, techniques, and strategy.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.
• Understanding of Iowa high school eligibility and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Enforce athletic policies approved by the WSR Board of Education.
• Apply district, state, and conference regulations consistently.
• Communicate through proper channels for concerns and grievances.
• Attend department, district, and league meetings.
• Establish program philosophy, teaching progression, and culture of accountability.
• Mentor assistant coaches and promote professional development.
• Delegate responsibilities, monitor implementation, and evaluate staff.
• Maintain high morale and cooperation within coaching staff.
• Assist Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament logistics.
• Coordinate facility use with custodial and maintenance staff.
• Collect and verify physicals, consent forms, and eligibility documentation.
• Maintain safe equipment and facility standards.
• Provide timely feedback and program improvement recommendations.
• Serve as mentor and role model promoting respect, effort, and integrity.
• Monitor academic progress and behavioral expectations of athletes.
• Maintain presence at practices, contests, and travel.
• Distribute training rules and emergency procedures.
• Report injuries within 24 hours; supervise team managers and support staff.
• Follow due process in disciplinary matters and communicate with families.
• Assist student-athletes with post-secondary athletic and academic opportunities.
