Job summary

Supermicro is seeking a Sr Optical Transceiver Firmware Engineer in San Jose to design and implement embedded firmware for high‑speed optical modules (QSFP‑family, 800G). You’ll collaborate across hardware, optics, and systems teams to deliver firmware for module control, diagnostics, and host communication in data center environments.

The role requires 8+ years in embedded software, strong C/C++ skills, and hands‑on experience with optical transceivers and CMIS‑based firmware.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• 8+ years of experience in embedded firmware or software development, preferably in networking, data centre, or hardware-control.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ programming for embedded systems.
• Experience developing firmware for hardware control and real‑time embedded platforms.
• Hands‑on experience with optical transceiver technologies (QSFP28/OSFP, etc.).
• Knowledge of interfaces/protocols: I2C/I3C, MDIO, SPI, UART, PMBus.
• Experience implementing or troubleshooting CMIS‑compliant firmware.
• Familiarity with optical diagnostics, telemetry, calibration, and health monitoring mechanisms.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and debug embedded firmware for advanced optical transceiver platforms.
• Implement and maintain firmware features for CMIS, I2C, MDIO, SPI, and PMBus interfaces.
• Develop firmware for module initialization, diagnostics, telemetry, DDM, and power management.
• Define firmware architecture and specifications with cross‑functional teams.
• Create manufacturing and validation firmware features for calibration, testing, and qualification.
• Develop automation tools and test frameworks to improve validation efficiency.
• Support interoperability testing with networking equipment from major vendors.
• Assist manufacturing with production testing, firmware programming, and field upgrades.
• Analyze and optimize firmware performance, reliability, and security.
