Job summary

Phoenix Children's is seeking a Lead Respiratory Therapist for the night shift at our Gilbert location. This 0.9 FTE leadership role combines hands-on bedside care with team operations, staffing coordination, and staff development.

The successful candidate will bring a minimum of three years in critical care RT, current NBRC RRT, AZ license, BLS, and preferably pediatric or NICU experience. PALS is required or obtained within nine months.

Position Summary

Posting Note: Phoenix Children's is seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapist to join our team as a Respiratory Therapist Lead – Night Shift at our East Valley Campus. This 0.9 FTE leadership opportunity is ideal for a clinically strong RT who wants to remain connected to bedside care while supporting team operations, staffing coordination, clinical decision-making, and staff development.

The RT Lead serves as a clinical and operational resource for the Respiratory Therapy team, leading huddles, supporting RTs during complex and high-acuity situations, troubleshooting clinical and equipment needs, assisting with staffing decisions, and providing leadership support as needed.

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of three years of critical care Respiratory Therapy experience and demonstrated leadership experience through a Lead role, precepting, committee involvement, or other leadership responsibilities. Pediatric and/or NICU experience is highly preferred.

Current RRT credential through the NBRC, Arizona Respiratory Care Practitioner license, and BLS certification are required. PALS certification is required or must be obtained within nine months of hire.

The selected candidate will train and work at the Thomas Campus until the East Valley facility opens in early 2027. This position provides general oversight of Respiratory Care services to ensure daily clinical operations are conducted in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and applicable standards. The position plans, coordinates, and adjusts staffing resources to support operational needs and maintain established productivity standards. The position also serves as a Team Leader across all Respiratory Care clinical areas and Phoenix Children’s campuses, providing clinical leadership, support, and oversight as needed. The incumbent maintains the knowledge, skills, competencies, and clinical expertise necessary to provide safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate care to patients of all ages across all Respiratory Care practice settings.

Position Duties

• Provides oversight for daily clinical operational activities that support patient care provision by determining level of staffing needed. Collects and analyzes information to project staffing plans for upcoming shift/shifts.
• Accurately manages and adjusts staffing schedule. Updates the departmental leadership team on staffing issues and concerns.
• Analyzes critical situations and applies appropriate judgment and critical thinking for problem resolution.
• Provides factual accounts of operational situations using effective communication methods to the department leadership and education team. Communicates experiences, safety concerns, and improvement opportunities. Completes occurrence reports as appropriate and assists with investigative follow up as needed.
• Assists with daily operational activities by helping monitor quality and workflow effectiveness. Trouble shoots issues and processes to ensure optimum efficiency.
• Participates in and promotes cost containment strategies. Assists with safety audits and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Interacts with and explains care modalities to patients, families, and the health care team in an understandable manner based on individual diversity and learning styles.
• Introduces oneself to the family, patient, and health care team. Displays a positive customer relations attitude.
• Safely performs various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within specialty area according to established standards, procedural guidelines, and policies. Assesses clinical status and provides patient care plan suggestions towards desired outcomes.
• Applies knowledge and understanding of the proper and safe use of all Respiratory Care interventions and related equipment. Successfully completes and assists with initial and on‑going competency validations. Troubleshoots interventions and equipment as it applies to various patient care situations.
• Demonstrates the ability to manage people by mitigating conflicts. Delegates duties throughout the shift in accordance to changing pt care demands while adhering to productivity standards.
• Manages multiple priorities and applies effective time management skills, using downtime for work related activities. Coaches and mentors others.
• Ensures timely and accurate patient care and billing documentation.
• Continuously improves and takes the initiative to develop self and others. Stays current on operational issues, priorities, policies, procedures, best practices and advances related to respiratory care.
• Attends educational offerings, departmental meetings, and stays appraised of departmental and hospital communication. Fosters communication to the respiratory care team.
• Works effectively in a team-based environment especially during stressful situations involving quickly changing priorities. Displays appropriate leadership skills in managing people, instilling trust and credibility.
• Intervenes appropriately in urgent and emergent situations. Coaches and develops other staff members.
• Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
