The Office of Public Advocacy (OPA) in Alaska seeks a Law Office Assistant I to manage incoming court cases and CASA volunteer files, perform data entry, and handle clerical tasks with accuracy.
Based in Anchorage, the role involves coordinating with attorneys, staff, and the public, maintaining calendars, and supporting office operations while upholding security and confidentiality standards.

One of the most critical functions of the Law Office Assistant (LOA) I is to assess, assign, and open incoming court cases and CASA volunteer files. The LOA I is also responsible for filing, checking in, and distributing all incoming materials; data entry; processing copy jobs; obtaining court copies; researching and obtaining professional client records, generally through written communication; monitoring the section staff calendar and coverage; ordering and maintaining office supplies; answering telephones; and other projects as assigned, including interfacing with other professionals and the public.
The Office of Public Advocacy (OPA) provides legal advocacy and guardianship services to vulnerable Alaskans. With offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Kenai, Palmer, and Bethel, OPA advocates for abused and neglected children in protective proceedings, provides public guardianship for incapacitated adults, advocacy for victims of elder fraud, attorney services for respondents in adult guardianship proceedings, for parents in child in need of aid cases, and conflict criminal cases received from the Public Defender Agency.
The section has high retention and a very amicable staff. There is a focus on teamwork within our section.
The OPA Anchorage office is located in beautiful downtown Anchorage, Alaska. We are located directly across from the Captain Cook Hotel and are in walking distance from many great restaurants and coffee shops and we offer free parking in designated areas.
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
PI01A1 – Law Office Assistant 1
One year of experience that involves some combination of providing significant customer service contact; eliciting or exchanging information as related to requirements or procedures necessary to secure services, authorizations, or goods on behalf of the client; and/or performing standard administrative tasks such as preparing correspondence or reports, filing, entering data, receiving payments, and/or maintaining logs and includes the regular, proficient use of electronic management information systems and word processing and other standard business software applications.
Most positions require incumbents to be able to obtain a Notary Public upon hire, and to be able to pass a criminal background check to meet security requirements for using criminal record networks such as APSIN and National Crim Enforcement Information Center/National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NCIC/NLETS). Some positions are required to work regular overtime during the standard workweek, on weekends, and/or holidays to provide support to the assigned duty attorney. If this requirement is present, it will be stated in the vacancy announcement.
