Judicial Law Clerks assist Judge Kelley L. Margetas by researching legal issues, drafting opinions, and aiding the Judge in well-informed determinations.

They contribute to shaping case law through research and recommendations and follow all Court procedural rules across multiple divisions of the court. The role includes researching and drafting opinions, assisting with trial preparation, and handling administrative duties to support court operations.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Research and compose Opinions and Orders.

• Draft Opinions and Orders for Appeals.
• Read Opinions from the York County Bench and decisions from higher courts.
• Answer phone calls and manage inquiries.
• Track case and motion activity and maintain records.
• Assist the Judge with administrative duties and correspondence.
• Assist the Judge in trial preparation.

Job description

Judicial Law Clerks provide critical assistance to Judge Kelley L. Margetas by researching legal issues, drafting opinions, and helping the Judge make well-informed legal determinations. They play a meaningful role in shaping case law through the influence their research and recommendations have on judicial decisions. Law Clerks work in accordance with all Court procedural rules across the Criminal, Civil, Family, Juvenile, and Orphans’ Court Divisions.

Job Duties

• Research and composition of Opinions and Orders.
• Compose Opinions and Orders and assign Motions.
• Compose Pre-Trial Orders.
• Compose Miscellaneous Orders.
• Compose Opinions and Orders for Appeals.
• Read Opinions generated from the York County Bench.
• Read Decisions Generated from the Superior and Supreme Court.
• Answer phone calls/questions.
• Track case and motion activity.
• Assist the Judge with administrative duties; correspondence, phone calls, and drafting letters/administrative orders.
• Assist the Judge in preparing for Trials.

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited school.
• Ability to conduct legal research both manually and on a computer.
• Ability to respond and produce work product for the supervising Judge in an expedient and efficient manner.
• Whether in person or by telephone, required to interact with the public, other departments, offices, and co-workers in a congenial, efficient, and responsible manner.

Salary

Starting salary of $56,165

A clerkship with a Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas judge offers a caliber of legal education that no classroom can replicate. From your first weeks as a law clerk, you will be immersed in a behind-the-scenes look at court operations, often with exposure to the broad spectrum of cases on the court's docket - civil and criminal, family, trust and estates, motions and trials, as well as appeals. You will draft opinions, conduct legal research on novel questions, observe witness examinations and jury voir dire, and work in close collaboration with a sitting judge (if there are open positions, you will find them on the left).
