Job summary

nLIGHT, Inc. is a leading provider of high-power semiconductors and fiber lasers, based in Camas, WA. The role supports the development team in defining mechanical design goals, product requirements, and cost objectives for laser systems.

You will perform thermal and mechanical modeling, support prototype builds, and work with vendors to bring systems into production. Strong CAD/CAE skills and a BS in a related field are required, with experience in SolidWorks/ANSYS/COMSOL preferred.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or comparable field.
• Proficiency with CAD software and engineering drawings; GD&T experience preferred.
• Understanding heat transfer, thermal modeling, stress/strain, materials selection, and standard machining processes.
• Ability to conduct analyses including materials selection, thermal/ mechanical modeling, tolerances, and equipment evaluation.
• Organized, detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication.
• Self-motivated to define specifications and deliver fully documented solutions.

Responsibilities

• Define mechanical design objectives and product requirements within the development team.
• Participate in mechanical design of laser systems and components.
• Conduct thermal and mechanical modeling and benchtop verification testing for laser assemblies.
• Apply DFX to create manufacturing-friendly, cost-optimized solutions.
• Plan and execute design verification test protocols including environmental/accelerated life testing.
• Oversee procurement and assembly of engineering and prototype builds.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external vendors to move systems to production.
