Job summary

Valmont is hiring a Backwelder in Brenham, TX. The role requires GMAW welding certification, ability to read drawings, and experience or training in welding. You will assemble pole shafts, cut with plasma, and work with grinders and drills on a multi-shift schedule.

The position offers first, second, or third shift with pay starting at $24.47/hour plus $1.00 shift differential and potential step increases plus an annual discretionary bonus.

Qualifications

  • Ability to use common manufacturing math.
  • 6 months welding experience or completion of welding training program.
  • Must pass GMAW rotational weld test and maintain certification.
  • Ability to produce good welds and read drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Use GMAW to tack weld small components to pole shaft assemblies.
  • Position parts manually and use crane to lift components.
  • Read drawings to determine parts and locations.
  • Use plasma torch to cut steel and use jigs for holes.
  • Measure distances with measuring tools and ensure accurate assembly.
  • Work in confined areas and handle tools like grinders and drills.
  • Follow safety guidelines and perform other duties as assigned.

A Brief Summary of This Position:

Under the direction of the Production Supervisor, the Backwelder must be certified in GMAW welding and must perform fit-up tasks. Backwelder must be well versed in the use of personal computers.

Available Shifts:
  • 1st Shift Days Standard Schedule: Monday - Thursday 7AM - 5PM*
  • 2nd Shift Evenings Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday 3PM - 11PM*
  • 3rd Shift Nights Standard Schedule: Monday - Thursday 9PM - 7AM*

*As needed, there will be work hours required outside the Standard Shift Schedule (above)

Starting Hourly Pay Rate (LG6):

$24.47

Shift Differential for hours worked on 2nd & 3rd shifts - $1.00 per hour

Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year and 2 years

Eligible for annual discretionary bonus

Essential Functions:
  • Uses GMAW process to tack weld various small components to round shafts to make a pole assembly for structural welds. The pole assembly generally consists of round shaft, butt plate, and/or other small parts
  • Manually position shaft for assembly. Uses crane for lifting various components. Frequently pushes, lifts, and pulls up to 50 pounds
  • Reads and interprets drawings to determine parts needed to assemble pole assembly. Locate and gather parts needed to assemble pole assembly, from parts staging area that is staged by the Storeroom personnel
  • Read and interpret drawings to ensure proper location of various small part attachments
  • Uses plasma torch to cut steel. Utilizes jigs made at Valmont for cutting holes in shafts. Wears protective goggles or hood to protect eyes from harmful rays
  • Uses measuring tape, levels, squares, and angle finders to measure distances and angles. Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Uses table to convert fractions to decimals, and decimals to fractions
  • Works in confined areas at various locations of the pole assembly line as necessary to accurately measure and assemble components described above. Moves under, around, and over poles as necessary, to get into proper position to assemble pole assembly
  • Uses motorized grinders, motorized buffers, stone grinders, and drills to help assemble product
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
  • Must be able to read and write English
  • Ability to use common manufacturing math
  • 6 Months of previous experience welding in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, and/or have graduated from an acceptable Technical Training Program focused in welding
  • Must pass GMAW rotational weld test and maintain certification
  • Ability to produce good welds.
  • Ability to read & interpret drawings, showing locations of holes & orientations.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices to prevent self-inflicting injuries & to prevent causing injuries to co-workers.
  • Follow all Valmont safety guidelines, rules, and regulations with a practical working knowledge of PPE and LOTO.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
  • 1 year previous experience welding in an assembly environment
  • 1 year previous experience welding in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
  • 1 year previous experience operating hand and/or power tools
  • The ability to accurately and honestly check one's own work for quality assurance
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Incumbent will also be exposed to production facilities where specific PPE will be required such as hand, hearing, foot, eye, and head protection. There will also be frequent exposure to outside elements for short periods of time. Being outside will also expose them to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.
