Job summary

Russo Hardware, Inc. in Schiller Park, IL is seeking a skilled small engine and diesel engine mechanic to diagnose, repair, and maintain a range of engines and power equipment.

You will troubleshoot 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, perform tune-ups, and order parts while delivering clear explanations to customers. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in small engine repair, strong diagnostic and mechanical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and reliable small engine and diesel engine mechanic to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of small engines and power equipment. Responsibilities/Duties

• Diagnose and repair small engines (2-stroke and 4-stroke)
• Perform routine maintenance and tune‑ups
• Order and install replacement parts
• Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and safe working conditions.
• Provide excellent customer service and explain repairs clearly
• Uphold a positive attitude and willingness to learn and grow within the mechanic team.
• Other duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of small engine repair, 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines,trailers and power equipment systems (Certification a plus)
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems
• Comfortable using a variety of shop tools, diagnostic software, and repair manuals.
• Excellent communication skills with a strong commitment to customer service.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple work orders efficiently.
• Ability to work independently and as par of a team

Credentials and Experience

• Prior experience as a Service Mechanic, Equipment Technician, or similar role preferred.
• 1-3 years of hands‑on experience in small engine repair or related field
• Forklift operation experience is a plus – certification provided

Physical Demands

• Employee must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing between 40-50lbs
• Required to bend, stoop, kneel, reach and climb to perform work
• May be required to stand, walk and use hands‑fingers for long periods of time
• May be required to look at the computer screen for long periods of time
