Job summary

Berns Garden Center & Landscaping is seeking a Landscape Designer to capture client visions and deliver high-quality design and project administration. You will handle presentations, schematic design, planting plans, and cost estimates, coordinating with the production team to ensure Berns standards.

Field knowledge and plant material expertise are essential for success. Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar design software, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Office is required.

Job description

Since 1956, Berns Garden Center and Landscaping has been the heart and soul of delivering exceptional horticulture and landscaping services to our community in Southwest Ohio. With locations in Middletown and Beavercreek, we take pride in cultivating beautiful spaces and fostering meaningful connections with our customers, employees, and community. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Landscape Designer to join our landscape division who can capture the customer's vision and deliver Bern's quality results. This position will be involved in all aspects of project development, sales and design, including presentation preparation, schematic design, planting plans, planting specifications, and project administration.

Duties Including but not Limited to:

• Preparing, reviewing, and approving drawings and renderings as required
• May coordinate technical and administrative activities with employees in other disciplines and other departments participating on an assigned project
• Develop, review, and implement construction documents, project budgets, and schedules
• Preparing site plans, working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for land development, showing ground contours, vegetation, locations of structures, and such facilities as roads, walks, parking areas, fences, walls, and utilities, coordinating arrangement of existing and proposed land features
• Preparing cost estimates, including project research, alternates and quality take offs
• Participates in regularly scheduled project meetings
• Maintains relationships with owners, consultants, and employees at all levels
• Assist in the training and evaluation of assigned architectural and design/drafting personnel
• Reviews and understands assignments and tasks and how they fit into strategic project goals
• Must maintain customer contact throughout sales process, including payment collection
• Responsible for estimating and maintaining acceptable gross margin on all opportunities
• Will work with production team to see that customer needs are met and quality meets Berns standards
• Must have expert knowledge of plant material based on hardiness, size, growth habit, and exposure. Will source plants that are readily available.
• Must be able to visualize the needs of the customer and communicate those needs both verbally and through renderings.

• Prior customer service and/or sales experience is a plus
• Proficiency in current technologies: AutoCAD or other design software, Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office are required. Knowledge and use of Aspire software is a plus.
• Asks thoughtful and relevant questions, strong conceptual and critical thinking skills
• Ability to produce strong graphic communications (computer and/or by hand)
• Field experience and horticultural knowledge is a must
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
• Ability to travel domestically as required

JOB ENVIRONMENT:

Up to 50% of this job is performed inside the building and the remaining 50% is outside, travel and sales.When outside there is exposure to all types of weather: heat, sun, high humidity, rain or cold. There is exposure to packaged soils and soil amendments, packaged chemicals, pollen, seeds and various types of plants.When inside the temperature is regulated.Personal drafting tables, drawing tools and computers are provided. Some sitting, standing, bending, kneeling is required. The tools used in this job include calculators, drafting tools, smart phones, computers, fax, and copier. The person in this position must be able to talk, hear and see.
