Job summary

Berns Greenhouse & Garden Center in Middletown, OH is seeking a Landscape Designer to capture clients' visions and deliver Bern's quality results. You will be involved in all aspects of project development, sales and design, including presentation preparation, schematic design, planting plans, and project administration.

The role requires expert knowledge of plant materials, ability to visualize customer needs, and strong drawing skills with AutoCAD or Aspire.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in AutoCAD or other landscape design software.
• Proficiency with Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of Aspire software is a plus.
• Prior customer service or sales experience is a plus.
• Valid Ohio Driver License is required.

Salary Range: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 Base+Commission/year

Overview

Since 1956, Berns Garden Center and Landscaping has been the heart and soul of delivering exceptional horticulture and landscaping services to our community in Southwest Ohio. With locations in Middletown and Beavercreek, we take pride in cultivating beautiful spaces and fostering meaningful connections with our customers, employees, and community. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Landscape Designer to join our landscape division who can capture the customer's vision and deliver Bern's quality results. This position will be involved in all aspects of project development, sales and design, including presentation preparation, schematic design, planting plans, planting specifications, and project administration. Berns will provide a competitive base salary in addition to commission pay, health benefits, 401k with a company match, life, and disability benefits.

Duties

• Preparing, reviewing, and approving drawings and renderings as required.
• May coordinate technical and administrative activities with employees in other disciplines and other departments participating on an assigned project.
• Develop, review, and implement construction documents, project budgets, and schedules.
• Preparing site plans, working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for land development, showing ground contours, vegetation, locations of structures, and such facilities as roads, walks, parking areas, fences, walls, and utilities, coordinating arrangement of existing and proposed land features.
• Preparing cost estimates, including project research, alternates and quality take offs.
• Participates in regularly scheduled project meetings.
• Maintains relationships with owners, consultants, and employees at all levels.
• Assist in the training and evaluation of assigned architectural and design/drafting personnel.
• Reviews and understands assignments and tasks and how they fit into strategic project goals.
• Must maintain customer contact throughout sales process, including payment collection.
• Responsible for estimating and maintaining acceptable gross margin on all opportunities.
• Will work with production team to see that customer needs are met and quality meets Bern's standards.
• Must have expert knowledge of plant material based on hardiness, size, growth habit, and exposure. Will source plants that are readily available.
• Must be able to visualize the needs of the customer and communicate those needs both verbally and through renderings.

• Asks thoughtful and relevant questions, strong conceptual and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to produce strong graphic communications (computer and/or by hand).
• Field experience and horticultural knowledge is a must.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Ability to travel domestically as required.
• Valid Ohio Driver License a must.

Job Environment

Up to 50% of this job is performed inside the building and the remaining 50% is outside, travel and sales. When outside there is exposure to all types of weather: heat, sun, high humidity, rain or cold. There is exposure to packaged soils and soil amendments, packaged chemicals, pollen, seeds and various types of plants. When inside the temperature is regulated. Personal drafting tables, drawing tools and computers are provided. Some sitting, standing, bending, kneeling is required. The tools used in this job include calculators, drafting tools, smartphones, computers, fax, and copier. The person in this position must be able to talk, hear and see.
