Job description

Job Title: Staff Landscape Architect

The Pennsylvania State University’s Office of Physical Plant (OPP) and Planning, Design, and Properties (PDP) seek a highly motivated staff Landscape Architect. In this role, you will help guide the design process and collaborate with designers and campus stakeholders to improve and maintain high-quality campus landscapes. This position offers an opportunity to shape the built environment at one of the nation’s leading universities while contributing to its legacy of excellence.

You will be part of a team that includes a senior landscape architect, the University Planner, and the University Architect. Your focus will be on design projects at University Park, the Commonwealth Campuses, the Hershey Medical Center, and the Dickinson School of Law. This position reports to the University Planner.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide landscape architectural services for the University Park and Commonwealth Campuses, including civic space improvements, landscape renewal projects, planting plans, and support for the Sustainable Landscape Plan.
  2. Create landscape master plans for the Commonwealth Campuses.
  3. Lead or participate in meetings with university stakeholders to ensure their needs and operations are met.
  4. Review consultant design work and oversee construction on capital projects for the campuses.
  5. Assist in site selection considering campus infrastructure and tree population impacts.
  6. Participate in master and precinct plans led by consultants or the University Planner.

Core duties include supporting senior landscape architects in managing campus environments through long-range planning, siting new buildings, developing design guidelines, and implementing campus features such as lighting, paving, and sustainable land stewardship. Supervision will be provided by the University Planner and senior professionals within PDP.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in Landscape Architecture.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Four or more years of related experience preferred.
  • Professional licensure as a Registered Landscape Architect.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful motor vehicle records check, as travel is required.
