Job summary

Frederick County Virginia Government is seeking a Landfill Technician to operate heavy equipment and assist with waste inspections at the landfill in Winchester, VA. The role involves directing traffic, performing basic equipment maintenance, and supporting mulching and tire shredding operations.

The position requires 2–3 years of equipment operation experience and a valid driver’s license. Normal schedule may include evenings, weekends, or holidays based on emergencies and weather.

As a Landfill Technician, you will:
  • Operate, with some supervision, all landfill equipment, including front-end loader, backhoe, bulldozer, trash compactor, dump truck, and any other related equipment.
  • Complete daily maintenance checks and prepare required documentation.
  • Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Direct traffic or serve as a spotter at the landfill.
  • Assist with waste inspections.
  • Assist with mulching and tire shredding operations.
  • May be required to work non-routine hours for snow removal or other emergencies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and have held it for at least 2 years.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and basic maintenance of trucks and heavy equipment, including applicable traffic laws, safety practices, and solid waste operations.
  • Ability to identify hazards, perform minor equipment adjustments and repairs, follow oral and written instructions, and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires physical effort working almost exclusively with moving and lifting items up to 50 pounds for an extended period, and walking and standing for extended periods of time, talking, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and gripping. Position requires being on call for emergencies and non-business hours, and working flexible schedules – including holidays and weekends.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor work is conducted in variable weather conditions – including extreme heat/cold. Exposed to high or low temperatures, humid conditions, and other unfavorable weather conditions throughout the year.
