Job Summary
Performs responsible work operating heavy equipment at the landfill to contain refuse and maintain the face and structure of the landfill. Works scheduled Monday, Saturday, every other Friday, and as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Operates compactors, loaders, scraper pans, bulldozers, tractors, and heavy trucks to prepare the landfill for waste disposal and maintain the structure and face of the landfill.
- Builds and maintains critical grade and access roads, earth dam, erosion control slopes, and grade.
- Maintains sediment pond and delivers dirt for daily, intermediate, and final cover.
- Moves, compacts, and covers solid waste in the landfill.
- Randomly inspects solid waste for illegally dumped materials and moves recyclable materials to recycle bins.
- Performs pre‑check on equipment, fuels equipment, and executes routine preventive maintenance such as lubricating and maintaining oil and antifreeze levels.
- Provides assistance to customers unloading or directs them to proper dumping areas.
- Ensures customer dumping areas are clean and free of debris.
- Inspects customer loads for unacceptable refuse and reports banned materials that do not meet landfill requirements.
- Moves wind‑fence as needed to control loose debris.
- Pressure washes equipment before mechanic service work.
- Adheres to department safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- General knowledge of operation and maintenance of a variety of heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of state and county rules and regulations pertaining to waste disposal.
- Ability to identify recyclable materials or materials requiring HAZMAT processing.
- Ability to contain waste and maintain the landfill per state and county regulations.
- Knowledge of safety procedures in operating heavy equipment.
- Ability to work under a variety of weather conditions for extended periods.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- Perform basic operational support functions: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Possess visual acuity required for inspecting small defects, operating machinery, and ensuring the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work.
- Be subject to environmental conditions both inside and outside; work with noise, vibration, hazards, and potentially infectious bodily fluids.
- Be subject to atmospheric conditions that may affect respiratory system or skin, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Education and Experience
High school graduation and considerable experience operating heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
North Carolina Driver License.
