Job summary

Veit is seeking a hands-on Landfill Operator at our Duluth, MN site. The role involves operating heavy equipment, performing routine maintenance, and helping manage waste screening, recycling, and transfer station tasks while ensuring safety protocols are followed.

The position requires basic construction experience and the ability to work in varied weather, with opportunities to assist with weigh scales, customer transactions, and daily site operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate landfill equipment (dozer, compactor, water truck, skid steer, backhoe).
  • Perform general maintenance on landfill equipment.
  • Screen loads for unacceptable waste and recyclables.
  • Direct landfill traffic for safe waste delivery.
  • Screen and sort load dumps in transfer station building.
  • Picks up windblown debris and assists weigh scale operations.
  • Assist customers with transactions and with landfill operations as needed.

Job Description:

Position Summary This non-union position performs tasks involving physical labor, basic cleanup and maintenance, and operation of equipment at our Landfill in Duluth, MN. In addition, this position picks and screens unacceptable waste and recyclables, helps direct landfill traffic flow, and helps with baling of cardboard, plastics, and aluminum for recycling. Also aids with lawn care, grounds maintenance, and snow removal as needed.

A Day in the Life
  • Operates landfill equipment as necessary. Equipment includes but is not limited to dozer, compactor, water truck, skid steer, backhoe.
  • Performs general maintenance on landfill equipment.
  • Screens loads for unacceptable waste and valuable recyclables.
  • Directs landfill traffic to ensure safe delivery of waste into the landfill.
  • Screens and sorts load dumps in the transfer station building.
  • Performs lawn care maintenance activities and general grounds maintenance.
  • Picks up windblown debris/litter generated from facility operations.
  • Provides backup assistance with operation of the weigh scale.
  • Assists customers with transactions.
  • Assists Landfill Manager with other facets of landfill operation as requested.
  • Follows company and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Brings problems to the attention of the Landfill Manager or Safety Director.
  • Follows daily procedures and protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings.
  • Keep supervisor informed of known actions, written or verbal, which may affect the ability to successfully perform tasks at Transfer Station or adversely affect Company operations.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned by management.
What You’ll Need

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions and procedures.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written when working with all levels of management and employees, external vendors and other business associates.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills.
  • Basic mathematic skills.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency as required by management and/or project requirements.
  • High School Diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 10 is preferred but not required.
  • First Aid/CPR is preferred but not required.
  • Type III Landfill Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Other Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to work extended hours (up to 12 per day) during peak periods.

  • Employee is exposed to environmental conditions, working near machines and loud noises associated with construction sites.
  • Exposed to variable weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, cold and heat.
Base Compensation

Base Compensation: 23-28 dollars an hour based on experience.

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
