Job description

NATURE OF POSITION

Operate and maintain heavy equipment in and around the City landfill, including processing and disposing of incoming solid waste, receiving and processing green waste and other raw products into commercial compost for sale by the City, and handling small quantities of hazardous waste.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General direction and oversight are provided by the Public Works Landfill Supervisor and their designee.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Model and foster the City’s core values: Service – Integrity – Collaboration – Equity – Leadership – Community
  2. Landfill Operations: Operate and maintain heavy equipment to process and dispose of solid waste, including bulldozers, front-end loaders, landfill compactors, earth-moving scrapers, and dump trucks.
  3. Compost Operations: Monitor green waste intake, analyze composting variables, operate equipment for processing and disposing of green waste, and maintain related facilities.
  4. Hazardous Waste/Solid Waste Drop Box Operations: Assist in hazardous waste operations, including sorting, packing, labeling, and inventory, while complying with regulations regarding recycling and hazardous waste management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of landfill, compost, and hazardous waste operations and safety practices.
  • Skill in operating heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools used in waste management.
  • Understanding of safety procedures, chemical hazards, and emergency protocols.
  • Ability to keep basic records, perform mathematical measurements, and use computer software related to compost tracking.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, follow directions, and maintain equipment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Earth-moving machinery, dump trucks, bulldozers, front-end loaders, water trucks, road graders, Gators/UTVs, tilt-frame trucks, and related landfill equipment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Extended sitting and standing, machinery operation, walking on uneven surfaces, visual and auditory communication, manual dexterity, and lifting up to 50 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Landfill environment with exposure to fumes, dust, odors, noise, toxic gases, chemicals, and machinery, often in outdoor conditions with uneven terrain and weather variations.


REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of responsible heavy equipment operation and maintenance experience, preferably in landfill, hazardous waste, or composting. Valid driver’s license, with a Class B CDL, air brakes, and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within one year. Ability to obtain a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within one year, and First Aid/CPR certification within one year.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Landfill Operator’s or Composting Certification, Washington Pesticide Applicator’s License, and bilingual skills in Spanish.
