A leading city government entity seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator for its landfill operations. Applicants should possess a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience in waste management. Responsibilities include operating heavy machinery, overseeing compost processing, and maintaining safety in hazardous waste operations. NATURE OF POSITION
Operate and maintain heavy equipment in and around the City landfill, including processing and disposing of incoming solid waste, receiving and processing green waste and other raw products into commercial compost for sale by the City, and handling small quantities of hazardous waste.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General direction and oversight are provided by the Public Works Landfill Supervisor and their designee.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Earth-moving machinery, dump trucks, bulldozers, front-end loaders, water trucks, road graders, Gators/UTVs, tilt-frame trucks, and related landfill equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Extended sitting and standing, machinery operation, walking on uneven surfaces, visual and auditory communication, manual dexterity, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Landfill environment with exposure to fumes, dust, odors, noise, toxic gases, chemicals, and machinery, often in outdoor conditions with uneven terrain and weather variations.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of responsible heavy equipment operation and maintenance experience, preferably in landfill, hazardous waste, or composting. Valid driver’s license, with a Class B CDL, air brakes, and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within one year. Ability to obtain a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within one year, and First Aid/CPR certification within one year.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Landfill Operator’s or Composting Certification, Washington Pesticide Applicator’s License, and bilingual skills in Spanish.
