Job summary

St. Mary’s County Government seeks a Waste Disposal Assistant to help residents with proper waste removal and disposal in accordance with regulations.

Key duties include overseeing the landfill area, enforcing rules on waste and recycling, and handling permits. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid Maryland driver’s license (CDL preferred), and the ability to operate vehicles and equipment safely.

Job description

1. Oversees the dumping area at the County landfill;
2. Enforces rules and regulations of proper waste removal and disposal, including recycling;
3. Opens and closes the transfer station as directed;
4. Issues permits to St. Mary’s County residents;
5. Makes accurate vehicle and bin counts;
6. Checks oil and anti-freeze levels of assigned vehicles;
7. Ensures the cleanliness of the drop-off and work areas;
8. Packs waste into proper compactors;
9. Fills out daily count sheets and prepares other reports as directed;
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures;
2. Knowledge of St. Mary’s County rules and regulations regarding waste removal and disposal;
3. Ability to differentiate between waste products and recyclable materials;
4. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and various equipment;
5. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating equipment as well as for ensuring public safety;
6. Basic knowledge of machinery and vehicle maintenance;
7. Ability to work and communicate effectively with staff and members of the public.

1. High school diploma or G.E.D.;
2. Valid Maryland Drivers license, Commercial Driver’s License preferred;
3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

Additional Requirements:

1. Must pass pre-employment physical;
2. Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results;
3. Must pass a pre-employment drug test.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires light physical effort in the handling of light materials and equipment in non-strenuous work positions up to 30 pounds and/or continual standing or walking of 60%+ of the time.

Work environment involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around various machines. Employees may be required to use protective gear such as boots and gloves; may require working in adverse weather conditions.
