Solid Waste & Recycling Division Job Description

The Solid Waste & Recycling Division is primarily responsible for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the County, in accordance with North Carolina State Law and all applicable local regulations. Gaston County employs an integrated solid waste management plan that includes sanitary landfilling, composting/mulching, recycling, and waste reduction programs.

The duties listed below are considered essential for this role, though additional responsibilities may be assigned:

1. Perform tire stacking duties, including laying tires inside a tractor trailer and completing all related paperwork.
2. Process recyclables brought to the baling facility.
3. Assist with HHW events and voting machine delivery and pickup.
4. Inspect and clean all heavy equipment radiators and clean landfill vehicles inside and out.
5. Collect recyclables from recycling/convenience sites and deliver to the landfill as needed; also provide supplies to recycling sites and assist with quarterly cleaning of recycling sites.
6. Remove unacceptable waste items and recyclables from the MSW and C&D working face daily.
7. Perform landscaping tasks such as mowing, weed trimming, and edging; clean around curbs in front of the landfill.
8. Gather litter throughout the entire job site and assemble and maintain litter fences.
9. Fuels all heavy equipment daily.
10. Control traffic flow by flagging to assist customers when scales are down.
11. Control dust by distributing water on haul roads.
12. Apply alternate daily cover material to the landfill daily.
13. Ensure supplies are stocked at the scale.
14. Perform other duties as assigned, including carpentry and general maintenance.

Minimum qualifications include:

• Completion of eighth grade; high school diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License with no driving restrictions.
• Ability to work varying schedules between 6:00 am and 6:30 pm Monday through Friday, and between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on alternating Saturdays.
• Ability to work in environments exposed to unfavorable health and weather conditions.
• Landscaping and carpentry skills are a plus.

The selected applicant must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
