Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. seeks a Land Surveying Intern in Gainesville, FL to work with experienced surveyors on field and office projects, gaining hands-on experience in boundary, topographic, construction, and utility surveys while learning core surveying principles.

You will assist with data collection, equipment setup, and field procedures, and participate in meetings and site visits to build technical knowledge.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is a plus.
• Exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, or surveying software is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Assist survey crews with field data collection for boundary, topographic, construction, and utility surveys under the supervision of experienced surveyors.
• Help set up, operate, and maintain surveying equipment, including GPS units, total stations, levels, and data collectors.
• Assist with measuring distances, elevations, and locations while learning proper surveying procedures and safety practices.
• Support survey crews by carrying equipment, setting stakes or monuments, clearing light vegetation when needed, and helping maintain an organized job site.
• Observe and participate in construction staking, boundary surveys, and other field surveying activities to gain practical experience.
• Learn how field data is processed and used to prepare survey deliverables, maps, and drawings.
• Attend team meetings, training sessions, and site visits to build technical knowledge and professional skills.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members, ask questions, and seek opportunities to expand your understanding of the surveying profession.
