Job summary

Dewberry is seeking a Land Survey Instrument Operator in Maryland to assist the field crew with boundary, ALTA, topographic, and construction surveys using the latest equipment, while possibly supervising the crew or working independently as required.

The role involves daily data collection, instrument maintenance, safe operation, and adaptability to travel to multiple Dewberry offices in Maryland. Strong math, communication, and physical stamina are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Minimum a High School Diploma with strong math skills and reliable field performance.
  • Experience with surveying fieldwork and data collection procedures is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Trimble GPS, robotics, total stations, levels, and data collectors is expected.
  • Skills in using Trimble Survey Controller software are required.
  • Able to pass a drug test and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the field supervisor with daily crew workload and safety.
  • Upload/download data from data collectors daily.
  • Care for and charge instrumentation; help keep equipment in top condition.
  • Support boundary, ALTA, topographic, ROW, and construction surveys as needed.
  • Be physically able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.

Job description

Land Survey Instrument Operator

Dewberry is currently seeking a Land Survey Instrument Operator to join its Land Surveying department in Maryland. The candidate should be responsible, highly motivated, detail oriented, and able to work both independently and as a key member of a survey crew. The role involves assisting in boundary, ALTA, topographic, right‑of‑way acquisition, transmission line, transportation, and construction surveys using the latest equipment and technology. The successful applicant may supervise the crew or work independently as required.

Locations

US-MD-Baltimore, US-MD-Lanham, US-MD-Frederick (some travel to other Dewberry offices)

Responsibilities
  • Assist the field supervisor with all aspects of the daily crew workload.
  • Work in a safe manner and obey all safety regulations.
  • Daily upload and download of data collectors.
  • Daily care and charging of instrumentation.
  • Continually advance knowledge with upgrades in technology.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Minimum of one year of survey experience.
  • High School Diploma (minimum).
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Good computer and data collector skills.
  • Proficiency with Trimble survey equipment (GPS, robotics, total stations, levels, and data collectors).
  • Proficiency with Trimble Survey Controller data collection software.
  • Knowledge of 3‑D scanners is a plus.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driving record check.
  • Pass a drug test.
  • Dependable.
  • Physically able to work outdoors and on construction sites under all weather conditions and terrain.
  • Ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 50 lbs; including body weight, equipment, tools and boxes, and ability to stand for long periods on varied surfaces.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
Salary Range

The projected range for this position is $42,000–$54,000 annually in our Baltimore, MD office. The range may vary slightly based on skills, experience, location, and market conditions.
