Job summary

City of Corsicana's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a reliable Equipment Operator/ Groundskeeper to maintain parks, fields, and landscapes, using mowers, edgers, and hand tools.

You will perform routine maintenance, assist with events, and ensure safety while serving the public; successful candidates will have a High School diploma or GED and a Texas driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair City parks, sports fields, and landscaped areas.
• Operate equipment such as mowers, edgers, tillers, pickup trucks, and hand tools.
• Perform general landscaping: mowing, weed eating, trimming, planting, irrigation repair.
• Clean park restrooms, pick up litter, and perform minor carpentry repairs.
• Assist with event setup, traffic control, and city-wide events.
• Work weekends, holidays, and after-hours as needed for emergencies.
• Drive and operate Parks Department vehicles and report major repair needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain and repair City parks, sports fields, and landscaped areas
• Operate equipment such as mowers, edgers, tillers, pickup trucks, chainsaws, and various hand tools
• Maintaining ball fields, including mowing, tilling, leveling, and striping
• Perform general landscaping and groundskeeping duties: mowing, weed eating, trimming, planting, and irrigation repair
• Clean park restrooms, pick up litter, and perform minor carpentry repairs
• Performing minor repairs and reporting major repair needs for vehicles, tools, and equipment
• Perform regular maintenance and assigned tasks on weekends, holidays, and as needed for special projects or emergencies
• Assist in setting up and breaking down department and city-wide events
• Assist with traffic control, setup, and support for City-sponsored events
• Work independently and with a team to complete job assignments based on specific instructions.
• Build positive working relationships with coworkers and supervisors and contractors
• Take initiative to identify problems and suggest solutions in assigned areas
• Provide courteous and timely responses to public inquiries and complaints
• Represent the Parks & Recreation Department with a positive public image

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required
• At least one year of stable work experience as an equipment operator, driver, or similar
• General knowledge of the operation, use, and safety of heavy equipment and machinery
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions with minimal supervision
• Ability to interact courteously with the public and coworkers
• Valid Texas Driver's License and satisfactory driving record required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of materials and maintenance techniques used in park and grounds upkeep
• Ability to operate and maintain hand tools and power equipment
• Basic understanding of irrigation systems, small repairs, and carpentry tasks
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Commitment to safe work practices
• Strong communication skills and a professional, courteous attitude with the public and coworkers
• Ability to work independently and proactively identify and report issues to supervisors

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

• Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during special events.
• Physically agile and capable of moving safely and efficiently through parks and work sites.
• Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 100 pounds
• Exposure to chemicals, plant irritants, vehicle fumes, and extreme temperatures
• Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, tractors, and hand tools.
• Ability to drive and operate Parks Department vehicles
• Requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and balancing.
• Comfortable working at heights (from ladders or bucket trucks) and around water (e.g., lakes or ponds).
• Must be able to verbally communicate and handle tools with both hands.
• Specific vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus
• Participation in event setup and takedown is mandatory.
• This position requires regular in-person attendance, including availability for weekend shifts, holidays, and after-hours emergency response as needed.

Employment Requirements

All applicants must pass a pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. Applicants must have and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record. Punctuality and regular attendance are required. Applicants must satisfactorily complete a one-year probation period.
