The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Laborer I/II, grade A06/A08 position, in the Resource Recovery Division.

About the Position

This is a full-performance level, manual labor position involving unskilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. Work is performed with general supervision, either in a crew or alone.

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful, and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling, waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management, and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Core services include:

• Providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division)
• Flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division)
• Waste collection, processing, and diversion from the landfill and other facilities (Resource Recovery Division)
• Sustainability initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases (Sustainability Division)
• Pet adoptions, animal shelter management, pet licensing, cruelty investigations, and humane outreach (Animal Services Division)

The position involves:

• Performing manual labor tasks supporting landfill operations, construction, and waste disposal.
• Operating County-owned equipment and vehicles as assigned.
• Adhering to safety protocols, including flagging traffic.
• Performing grounds maintenance such as grass cutting, seeding, fertilizing, tree trimming, shrubbery care, trash removal, gutter cleaning, and other tasks.
• Cleaning and washing landfill equipment and vehicles.
• Removing debris, cleaning landfill buildings, and maintaining landfill properties and adjacent roadways.

Qualifications: Completion of six (6) school grades or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:

• Have some knowledge of unskilled manual labor tasks and tools.
• Have some knowledge of safety precautions related to automotive and public works equipment.
• Be able to use simple hand tools.
• Understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
• Work effectively alone and with a crew.
• Perform manual labor for extended periods, often in adverse weather conditions.
