Summary
This is a multi-dimensional labor position involving maintenance tasks on County roads and bridges, requiring physical exertion and timely completion of tasks. The work is performed under the supervision of the foreperson, Labor II, Crew Chief, or Administrator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate and perform preventative maintenance on County-owned bridges and roads, report findings, and coordinate repairs.
- Inspect signage on bridges and determine signage needs, gathering materials as per the sign manual.
- Operate various County vehicles and machinery, including pickup trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, and snowplows. A valid Pennsylvania CDL is desirable.
- Maintain communication with supervisors and respond to on-call and emergency situations as an essential County personnel.
- Use and read a tape measure; operate and maintain equipment like backhoes, air compressors, chainsaws, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, and jackhammers.
- Remove snow, ice, debris, foliage, and overgrowth from roads, bridges, structures, and guiderails; perform mowing in designated areas.
- Possess basic carpentry and masonry skills.
- Manage traffic control in work zones according to PennDOT standards.
- Perform additional maintenance and reporting tasks as directed.
- Work effectively in a team and independently when necessary.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Pennsylvania CDL Class A, B, or C driver’s license.
- Knowledge of county roads and bridges, construction, and maintenance procedures.
- Two years of construction/structural road and bridge experience preferred.
- Ability to interpret plans, instructions, and specifications.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; wear protective equipment.
Physical Demands
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain, lift over 50 lbs, and work in various climates.
- Stand, walk, sit, and communicate effectively; perform physical tasks including climbing, bending, and kneeling.
- Visual acuity requirements include close, distance, color, and depth perception.
Work Environment
- Work in all weather conditions; noise levels are moderate to loud.
- Use of PPE required; work involves potential hazards.
