Job description

Summary

This is a multi-dimensional labor position involving various maintenance tasks on County roads and bridges. The work requires heavy physical exertion and timely completion of tasks. The position reports to the foreperson and/or Labor II but can also receive direction from the Crew Chief, Administrator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Operate and perform preventative maintenance on County-owned bridges and roads, report findings, and coordinate repairs with the Foreperson and Superintendent.
2. Inspect signage on bridges and determine the necessary signage for specific locations, gathering materials as per the sign manual.
3. Operate various county vehicles and machinery, including pickup trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, and snowplows. A valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred.
4. Maintain clear communication with the Foreperson, Superintendent, and Administrator as needed.
5. Respond as an essential County personnel, including potential on-call and emergency hours.
6. Use and read a tape measure, and operate and maintain equipment such as backhoes, air compressors, chainsaws, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, and jackhammers.
7. Remove snow and ice from County roads and maintenance yards using snow plows.
8. Clear debris, foliage, and overgrowth from bridges, structures, guiderails, and mow designated Right-of-Ways.
9. Possess basic carpentry and masonry skills.
10. Control and maintain traffic flow in work zones according to PennDOT standards.
11. Perform additional maintenance and reporting tasks as directed by Laborer II, Foreperson, or Superintendent.
12. Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands

The physical demands include walking on uneven terrain, shoveling, raking, lifting over 50 lbs, flagging, working in various climates, climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling, and crawling. The role requires the ability to follow safety procedures, stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and depth perception.

Work Environment

The work environment is typically moderate to loud, with exposure to all weather conditions and potential hazards. PPE is mandatory.
