Job Summary

*The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

  • The purpose of this position is to provide building ground and landscaping maintenance at District 3B’s various truck stations. Perform a variety of road maintenance activities to support current maintenance staff, so roadways and roadsides are safe and clear and in good condition according to MN/DOT standards and perform related work as required.
  • Assist with roadside maintenance activities (e.g., maintaining roadways/shoulders and rights of way with gravel, bituminous and concrete; repairing guardrail; patching potholes; repairing shoulders; weed whipping; cleaning culverts; installing catch basins; placing/removing Adopt-A-Highway bags; removing objects from roadsides; performing work associated with accidents).
  • Learn to perform vegetation management activities (e.g., removing roadside debris; pruning and/or removing dead trees; mowing, planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removing trees, grass, shrubs, brush; chipping tree limbs; removing/grinding stumps).
  • Learn to safely operate equipment, perform service cleaning maintenance, and make minor repairs.
  • Assist in performing traffic control set-ups and flagging duties at work sites.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, Laborer General applicants must meet all the following:

  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work sufficient to carry out detailed work directions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor work sufficient to complete assignments.
  • Strength and agility necessary to bend, lift, dig, reach, and load heavy materials.
  • Endurance necessary to perform indoor and outdoor tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Valid Class D Drivers License

In addition to the preceding minimum qualifications, you will be assessed on the following if interviewed:

  • Ability to understand oral directions sufficient to carry out verbal assignments in a safe and efficient manner.
