Job summary

The City of Hamtramck is seeking a full-time Laborer in the Department of Public Service to assist with maintenance of streets, utilities, and city facilities. The role requires practical, hands-on work in all weather and seasonal conditions in a city environment.

Under supervision, you will snow plow, patch roads, install signs, operate water distribution tasks, inspect sewers, and assist with building repairs.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D required.
• Obtain S-4 Water Distribution License within 12 months of hire.
• Valid Michigan driver's license with clean record.
• Experience in municipal maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

• Locate water/sewer lines using drawings and stake lines.
• Operate sewer cleaning equipment and trucks; perform snow removal.
• Repair streets, install/maintain signs; maintain parks and debris cleanup.
• Assist with building maintenance and city infrastructure repairs.
• Inspect and repair city sewers; set up barricades and safety tape.
• Complete work orders; on-call/overtime as needed.

Job description

The City of Hamtramck has an opening for a full-time Laborer in our Department of Public Service Department. The Department of Public Services is located inside City Hall at 3401 Evaline Street, Hamtramck, MI 48212. This is an AFSCME union position, and the position reports to the Director of the Department of Public Services or appointee.

Job Description Summary:

Under general supervision of the DPS foreman, DPS assistant foreman and crew leader, the Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance of municipal facilities and streets, rights-of-way, storm drains, sewer lines, water system, graffiti removal, and perform related work as directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Use water and sewer drawings to locate, mark, and stake water service lines, water mains, sanitary and storm sewer mains and laterals
• Operate sewer cleaning, dump trucks, snowplows, salters, pumps, air compressors, compressors, lawn mower, and other power tools
• Perform snow removal activities
• Repair and patch streets and alleys
• Install, remove, and maintain street signs
• Maintenance of city parks, lots and cleanup of debris
• Perform building maintenance and assist with cleaning of city owned buildings and properties
• Assist with performing repairs to city-owned infrastructure
• Fire hydrant maintenance and repairs
• Turn on and off water services to Hamtramck water customers
• Operate water distribution system valves
• Assist with the repair of water service lines and stop boxes
• Perform carpentry, construction and bench repair work
• Install/remove/repair residential and commercial water meters and meter transmitter units;
• Maintain parking meters, parking lots, and associated equipment
• Set up and remove barricades and caution tape at work sites
• Inspect city sewers, catch basins, and perform repairs as assigned
• Maintain and repair city owned trash containers
• Complete work orders into a computerized device utilizing basic computer knowledge & Microsoft Office programs
• Inspect work completed by vendors and contractors
• Must be available to work overtime as needed including being on call
• Tasks involving working outdoors in natural environments with exposure to all weather conditions
• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 1-3 years' experience working in municipal government preferred

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or G.E.D
• Reasonable experience in a variety of equipment operation, maintenance, construction and repair tasks
• Valid Michigan Driver’s License with clean driving record
• Obtain and maintain a S-4 State of Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Water Distribution License; Required within twelve (12) months of hire
