Job summary

Cleveland Metropolitan School District is seeking a Probationary Laborer to join the Facilities Department. Under supervision, you will maintain and clean the school building and grounds, perform yard work, and carry out routine repairs as able.

This on-site position requires a high school diploma or GED and 2+ years of experience as a cleaner, laborer, or maintenance worker. The role includes walking, lifting up to 15 pounds, and ladder work; the work schedule follows CMSD needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two or more years of experience as a cleaner, laborer, or maintenance person.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to work on ladders or scaffolds.

Responsibilities

  • Clean building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas.
  • Shovel, plow, and salt walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as required.
  • Clean toilets, scrub, and disinfect toilet floors when required.
  • Perform yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting and trimming trees and shrubbery to keep the school grounds safe and attractive.
  • Maintain floors in a clean and attractive condition at all times.
  • Make building repairs as capable.
  • Report repair needs and any damage to school or facility property to the custodian or person in charge.
  • Assist with the implementation of an ongoing preventive maintenance program.
  • Move furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities directed by the principal or custodian.
  • Perform other laborer duties as required outside the mail room and print shop while observing strict compliance with established procedures.

Overview

Under the supervision of the Facilities Department and building administrator, this position performs maintenance and other duties of the assigned school building. Tasks include cleaning the building and grounds, yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting, trimming trees and shrubbery, maintaining a safe and attractive environment, and performing building repairs as capable.

Responsibilities

  • Good work record, including performance, attendance, and punctuality.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The job requires frequent moving, walking, standing, and occasional lifting up to 15 pounds. The employee must regularly stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently talks and/or hears. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position is located in a normal school environment.

Compensation

Probationary Laborer – $19.20 per hour (90‑day probation). After 90 days, Laborer Step 1 – $21.29 per hour. Union: Local 860.
