Job description

ST, BRIDG, DRAIN - GENERAL PURPOSE

Manual labor position involving unskilled and semi-skilled tasks with training or experience working with tools, equipment, and various materials.

Supervision Received

Direct supervision by lead crew member; general supervision by Sr. Crew Chief, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Service and wash vehicles and equipment.
  2. Load, unload, and move materials and equipment.
  3. Operate hand-held equipment such as earth compactors and jackhammers.
  4. Maintain and assist with landscaping of city grounds, rights of way, and easements.
  5. Operate small engine and minor automotive equipment like power mowers, weed eaters, and chainsaws.
  6. Drive city vehicles with a valid class E driver's license.
  7. Perform minor repairs and general maintenance on structures or water systems.
  8. Perform rough carpentry work such as building fences, scaffolds, and concrete forms.
  9. Assist with pouring cement, flagging traffic, trenching, etc.
Other Responsibilities

Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Desired Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimal reading skills required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds over 25 yards (Public Utilities).
  • Ability to lift and carry 90 pounds over 25 yards (Public Works).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to operate simple shop equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Capability to perform heavy manual tasks under various conditions.
  • Ability to work from construction specifications.
  • Competence as a Department of Labor and Industries excavation site supervisor.
  • Skilled in operating listed tools and equipment.
Special Requirements

Must complete computerized assessments in learning aptitude, mechanical aptitude, and candidate profile.

Tools and Equipment Used

Pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone.

Physical Demands

Regular use of hands for handling and operating objects; frequent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and smelling. Must lift up to 90 pounds (public works) or 50 pounds (public utilities) over 25 yards. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Exposure to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, electricity, and potential shocks.

Work Environment

Primarily outdoor work in various weather conditions. Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, vibration, and occasional high or precarious places. Exposure to fumes, chemicals, and electrical hazards is possible. Noise levels are typically loud.
