Job summary

Superior Paving Corp. is seeking a Laborer I to support asphalt paving and milling crews with essential physical tasks, including asphalt preparation, jackhammering, and site cleanup. You will assist equipment operators, spot trucks, and ensure safe workflows in active construction zones.

The role requires ability to follow directions, learn hand tools, and maintain safety standards. 18+ years old, with reliable transportation, and willingness to work overtime as needed.

  • Ability to learn how to use hand tools and control traffic according to regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general labor tasks to support paving and milling operations, including asphalt preparation, jackhammering, shoveling, raking, and site cleanup.
  • Support milling operations by cleaning behind the mill, removing loose material, and maintaining safe work areas, or assist paving operations by preparing edges, cleaning joints, and supporting asphalt placement.
  • Assist equipment operators by providing directions, maintaining safe distances, and supporting efficient workflow while acting as a truck spotter to guide haul trucks safely into position and ensure proper dumping procedures.
  • Performs essential paving and milling labor by loading and unloading equipment, maintaining a clean and safe jobsite, and preparing work areas by clearing debris, sweeping surfaces, and staging tools and materials for efficient crew operations.
  • Operate small tools, hand tools and light equipment when trained (e.g., jackhammer, shovels, brooms, blower, tamper).
  • Operate a pilot truck to safely guide vehicles through active construction zones and maintain proper traffic flow if designated. (Valid Driver License required)
  • Sets up and removes traffic control and directs traffic through work zones when needed.
  • Follow directions from the foreman and equipment operators to maintain project quality.
  • Perform safety checks, use proper PPE, follow work-zone procedures, keep safe distances, report hazards immediately, and maintain a clean, compliant, hazard‑free worksite.

Description

The Laborer I supports asphalt paving and milling crews by performing essential physical tasks, including asphalt preparation, jackhammering, general labor duties, assisting equipment operators, spotting trucks, reviewing load tickets, operating a pilot truck, and helping with site cleanup and organization to ensure safe, efficient project operation.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Support milling operations by cleaning behind the mill, removing loose material, and maintaining safe work areas, or assist paving operations by preparing edges, cleaning joints, and supporting asphalt placement.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds; stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods; tolerate noise, vibration, heat, and outdoor conditions common to paving operations; demonstrate the manual dexterity needed to use hand tools and equipment; and maintain good eye‑hand coordination, physical fitness, multi‑limb coordination, static strength, and balance.

Work is performed outdoors on roadways, construction zones, and active traffic areas, often in hot, cold, or otherwise adverse weather. Employees are regularly exposed to hot asphalt, dust, fumes, loud noise, and vibration from tools and equipment.
