Job summary

Suffolk County Department of Public Works is seeking a Laboratory Technician to work at their West Babylon, NY lab. Under direct supervision an employee in this class performs routine, entry level laboratory tests and assembles data on test results.

The employee takes samples and performs tests pertaining to wastewater, water quality, mosquito identification, soil, concrete, etc. Records test results, operates testing apparatus, and assists in evaluating new procedures with performance reviewed

Qualifications

• Graduation from college with federally-authorized accreditation or NY State registration with an Associate’s degree in one of the natural sciences (physical or biological).
• High school diploma/equivalency plus two years of technical laboratory experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by (a) and (b).

Responsibilities

• Record test results and assemble data on water quality, biological sampling and mosquito numbers for interpretation by supervisors.
• Identify non-target organisms, adult and larval mosquitoes, and ticks by microscope or other means.
• Perform chemical tests of water to determine presence of industrial waste.
• Test bituminous specimens, soils, concrete, etc.
• Perform microbiological testing to identify total and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations.

Education

Associate’s degree in natural sciences

High school diploma or equivalency with 2 years laboratory experience
