Job summary

Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician II position is a grant‑funded role providing technical support in a molecular parasitology research laboratory. The position offers independent work reporting to the Principal Investigator and involves a range of molecular biology experiments.

Responsibilities

• Conduct experiments using current molecular biology methods (PCR, cloning, flow cytometry, CUT‑RUN, parasite culture, library preparation for high‑throughput sequencing).
• Prepare reagents, solutions, and maintain safe storage of biological and chemical materials.
• Sterilize equipment, plasticware, and reagents; monitor and reorder expendable supplies.
• Assist in supervising and training research students on laboratory methods.
• Manage data entry, retrieval, and analysis on Mac computers and document work in a detailed laboratory notebook.
• Collect and dispose of waste materials according to regulations.
• Ensure a safe laboratory environment, maintain equipment, and oversee compliance with safety regulations.
• Perform additional research duties and other assigned tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related field (by May 2026). A combination of coursework and experience may be considered.
• 1–2 years of experience with modern molecular biology instrumentation and techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, Sanger/Illumina sequencing).
• Familiarity with command‑line computational analyses and comfortable with python, R, and shell scripting.
• Strong manual dexterity, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work independently and cooperatively.
• Knowledge of PCR, gel electrophoresis, and routine molecular biology techniques.
• Experience running and programming command‑line pipelines in Unix and Python is preferred.
• Knowledge of applicable safety standards.

Remote Work Eligibility

Category B: initial 30‑day on‑campus work period required. Up to zero remote work days per week during the academic year and up to one remote work day during the non‑academic year. Remote work arrangements must be approved by supervisor, human resources, and may be reviewed periodically.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly sit, stand, use hands and fingers; walk; occasionally reach with hands and arms.
• Regularly lift and carry up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
• Requires close and distance vision, ability to adjust focus.

Hours & Salary

Regular hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (or 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) Monday–Friday with a one‑hour unpaid meal period. Salary: $23–$25 per hour. Full‑time, non‑exempt, benefits‑eligible.
