Job summary

The Andersen Lab in Johns Hopkins University’s Biology Department seeks a Laboratory Technician to perform routine lab processes under close supervision, including reagent generation, ordering lab supplies, nematode propagation, vertebrate handling, and genomics tasks.

The role requires operating standard equipment, following established protocols, maintaining the lab, and reporting issues. Experience with nematodes is preferred but not required; familiarity with Apple or PC products is expected.

The Andersen Lab in the Department of Biology is seeking a Laboratory Technician to perform routine laboratory processes and follow established protocols under close supervision. Duties include but are not limited to the generation of reagents, ordering the lab supplies, propagation of nematodes, vertebrate animal handling, parasitic nematode isolation and genomics, operation of general lab equipment, lab maintenance, and management of work-study personnel.

The Laboratory Technician performs routine laboratory processes and follows routine protocols under close supervision.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate standard equipment.
  • Use standard procedures for specific laboratory tests and preparation techniques.
  • Assist with laboratory maintenance, prepare solutions, and order supplies.
  • Identify and report problems in the completion of routine lab processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties described above

  • Microinjection for transgenesis or genome editing.

This is a grant-funded position; continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with nematodes (e.g., Caenorhabditis elegans) and microinjection for transgenesis or genome editing is preferred but not necessary.
  • Familiarity with Apple or PC products is necessary.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
