Job summary

Middlesex Community College (MCC) seeks an Engineering Laboratory Technician I to maintain CAD/engineering labs, support faculty, and ensure safe, organized learning spaces at the Bedford campus with occasional Lowell travel.

You will assist with CAD workflows, equipment setup, and inventory while supporting students and staff in a dynamic STEM environment. Position starts Sep 2026 with a 37.5-hour week.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED and CAD program aptitude.
  • A.S. degree in engineering/technology preferred; strong CAD/programming skills are desired.
  • Ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot lab instruments and machinery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure CAD, engineering and robotics equipment function properly (3D printers, CNC, testing equipment).
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of labs and classrooms.
  • Coordinate with faculty to prepare materials for lab procedures.
  • Test and calibrate equipment for upcoming labs and assist students with projects.
  • Manage inventory and submit purchase requests based on lab needs.
  • Handle hazardous chemicals per MSDS guidelines and dispose waste accordingly.
  • Coordinate shared equipment with other departments and ensure lab safety signage.

Title: Laboratory Technician I, CAD & Engineering

General Summary: The engineering laboratory technician I maintains a sanitary, safe and efficient learning environment (i.e., computer classrooms and engineering labs) and provides services for faculty who teach engineering, computer aided design (CAD), and workforce development courses. The engineering lab tech will perform administrative and laboratory work which includes maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies, setting up and breakdown of laboratory experiments, and ensuring laboratory safety, efficiency and organization. They will work with the IT Service Desk staff in providing hardware and software support for the Technology Center Service Desk for all MCC Faculty, Staff, and Students, when Robotics and CAD support is not needed, or tasks are completed. This includes answering Service Desk phone calls, creating and updating tickets, and help in supporting other classroom technology. This individual will function as IT support for the CAD and engineering program.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure proper functioning of CAD, engineering and robotics equipment, including but not limited to 3D printers, CNC machines, and materials testing equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the computer classrooms and laboratory spaces belonging to the Engineering and Engineering Technology Department and robotics
  • Clean, organize, and maintain availability of all equipment in the labs
  • Coordinate with faculty via email and in person to prepare materials for lab procedures
  • Test and calibrate equipment in preparation for upcoming labs
  • Assist engineering students with their projects to safely operate engineering equipment
  • Manage inventory of engineering consumables and equipment needed for the labs
  • Submit purchase order requests for approval to the department chair (who submits for final approval to the dean's office) based on inventory and upcoming lab requests
  • Handle caustic, toxic, and hazardous chemicals according to MSDS guidelines
  • Dispose of toxic chemical waste produced in lab classroom following lab protocol
  • Coordinate logistics of shared equipment with other departments
  • Update and ensure signage for lab safety is available and visible for students and faculty
  • Ensure faculty is aware of lab safety requirements and lab request submission procedure
Requirements:

  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices
  • Ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot various lab instruments and machinery

  • Willingness to continuously learn and improve skills
  • Ability to follow and knowledge of chemical handling safety guidelines
  • Familiarity with MSDS (material safety data sheet) and SDS guidelines (safety data sheets)
  • Able to maintain motivated autonomous work ethic under limited supervision
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks within a deadline
  • Strong team and leadership skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suit
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A.S degree in an engineering or technology field

  • Ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot various lab instruments and machinery
  • Ability to follow and knowledge of chemical handling safety guidelines

  • Familiar with working at a community college
  • Bilingual skills a plus
