Job summary

Florida Polytech­nic University seeks a Laboratory Technician to support instructional and research labs, ensuring safe operation and efficient function of laboratories. The role requires organizational and communicative skills, with ability to work independently and in teams.

The candidate will assist with lab safety training, equipment maintenance, and development of new experiments, reporting to the Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Full-time on-site.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field.
  • At least 2 years of laboratory experience.
  • Equivalents may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's in electrical or computer engineering.
  • Experience with electronics test equipment and inventory systems.
  • Familiarity with OSH/EH&S compliance.
  • Proficient in MATLAB/Python and circuit simulation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee laboratory setup and breakdown and coordinate with faculty members.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of lab facilities and equipment.
  • Manage laboratory stockroom and inventory supplies.
  • Order supplies and verify receipts.
  • Maintain equipment logs and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Assist EH&S with lab safety training and waste management.
  • Support development of new lab experiments with faculty.

Job Description Summary

The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at FloridaPolytechnic University is seeking applicants for the role ofLaboratory Technician. The selected candidate will support bothinstruction and research laboratories duties. In addition, theapplicant will ensure efficient and safe operation of assignedlaboratories. The desired candidate must be organized, have goodwriting and oral communication skills, and be able to work bothindependently and as part of a team. This position reports to theChair of Electrical and Computer, Engineering within AcademicAffairs

Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee laboratory setup and breakdown, coordinate with facultymembers regarding their ongoing needs, and generate ideas andsuggestions related to lab setup, experiments, and improvements toenhance the course curriculum.
  • Ensures that the laboratory facilities, materials, andequipment are kept clean, operational, and in a safe condition;responsible for maintaining lab coats (inventory, maintenance,cleaning & repairs), including submitting invoices for paymentto the EH&S Office.
  • Maintains the organization of drawers, cabinets, and otherlaboratory storage areas
  • Manages the laboratory stockroom(s), and inventorysupplies
  • Responsible for ordering supplies and equipment and verifyingreceipts.
  • Ensures that all the equipment remains operational byunderstanding operating instructions, maintaining equipment logs,troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performingpreventive maintenance, and scheduling repairs
  • Assist the Safety Office with conducting lab orientation andlab safety training with new students, faculty, and adjunct facultyeach semester.
  • Assist with managing waste streams and maintaining governmentcompliance procedures; report non-compliance and any other issuesfound to the EH&S office.
  • Understands and follows the University's Chemical Hygiene Planand Safety Plan
  • Assist the EH&S Office with overseeing the proper disposalof waste from the laboratories.
  • Maintains a current inventory for the laboratory and ensuresthe currency of material safety data sheets
  • Ensures that current inventories are available to all relevantparties
  • Works with the university safety officer to ensure access toinventory information for emergency responders
  • Assist the EH&S Office with maintaining records and logs ofall safety equipment inspections. participates in the life of theuniversity by attending and participating in group and disciplinemeetings
  • Remains current in instrument usage and laboratory managementand safety through participation in professional developmentopportunities
  • Works with the faculty in the development and set-up of new labexperiments.
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of general safety protocol.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of use and preparation of chemicals andreagents.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and MicrosoftOffice.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but notlimited to lifting heavy items (up to 50 pounds unassisted),bending, standing, climbing and walking.
  • Ability to carry out written directions.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships;demonstrating sensitivity and respect for a diversepopulation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or aclosely related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory settingas an employee or student worker.
  • In lieu of a degree, any appropriate combination of relevanteducation, experience, and/or certifications may beconsidered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering
  • Experience with electronics test equipment
  • Experience with inventory management systems, preventivemaintenance programs, and OSH/EH&S compliance
  • Technical skills
    • Experience/familiarity with PCB assembly and soldering
    • Experience with Oscilloscope, Ammeter, Voltmeter, multimeters,function generators, electronic troubleshooting, and repair.
    • Experience with MATLAB/Python and circuits simulation software(multiline, LTSpice etc.)
Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Other Specific Requirements of Law
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires a criminal background check.

Normal Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.Occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required. Mustbe willing to work flexible hours.

Target Hiring Salary

$23.22 to $24.52 an hour commensuratewith experience.
