Laboratory Supervisor

Position Summary
The Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and directing all activities of the Chemistry and Immunology laboratories to ensure maximum quality of testing and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
- Ensure the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with hospital and regulatory/accreditation standards.
- Ensure employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures.
- Ensure staff competency and ongoing education requirements are met as per hospital policy.
- Participate in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization.
- Attend management/leadership meetings and communicate relevant information to staff.
- Participate in committees, task forces, and projects as appropriate.
- Maintain a safe environment for employees and patients.
- Maintain knowledge of departmental operations.
- Collaborate with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promote team concepts.
- Demonstrate positive customer service and foster positive employee relations.
- Support hospital initiatives and act as a positive change agent.
- Promote a professional image and serve as a role model, coach, mentor, and resource.
- Supervise tests performed by Chemistry Scientists.
- Train and assist Scientists with specialized tests; interpret results for physicians and advise on follow-up tests.
- Oversee the Quality Control Program and prepare monthly reports.
- Manage payroll and timesheets.
- Stay informed about accrediting agencies' standards to ensure compliance.
- Document test implementation and staff training.
- Oversee Point-of-Care Glucose testing.
- Maintain effective communication within and outside the department.
- Establish and review the Quality Assurance Program.
- Assist with laboratory software development and troubleshooting.
- Monitor turnaround times for tests.
- Perform duties of Sectional Scientist and Assistant Supervisor as needed.
- Develop departmental goals and objectives.
- Handle hiring, evaluation, counseling, and termination of staff.
- Ensure staff completion of orientation and ongoing education.
- Participate in educational activities to maintain expertise.
- Utilize various communication methods effectively.
- Adhere to safety standards for staff and patients.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratories or designee.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Technology or related science with six years of relevant hospital experience.
- Master's Degree in Clinical Chemistry preferred.
- ASCP or NCA Certification preferred.
- Current NYS License or licensure eligibility required.
