Job summary

Allegheny Health Network is seeking a skilled Laboratory Assistant to receive, prepare, and process specimens delivered to the laboratory. The role supports patient registration, test orders, specimen handling, and reporting, ensuring accurate charges and efficient operations.

The position emphasizes maintaining clean work areas, assisting with telecommunications, and mentoring students while adhering to WPAHS policies and HIPAA/privacy standards.

Qualifications

• 3 months experience in a clinical laboratory setting, registration, medical terminology.
• Laboratory training program or degree in clinical sciences is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Registers patients and performs test order entry into laboratory information system accurately and efficiently to ensure proper testing and charges of patient account.
• Verifies specimen identification and prepares and processes specimens according to department procedures and protocols.
• Maintains the cleanliness of the work area and adequate supplies for efficient laboratory operations.
• Provides support such as answering telephones, faxing reports, and send-outs.
• Operates and maintains instrumentation, recognizes problems and takes appropriate action.
• Mentors MLA students in specimen processing utilizing WPAHS policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.
