Job summary

Qualifications

• Equivalent of four (4) years of high school education.
• Up to three (3) months to become proficient.
• MLA - Medical Laboratory Assistant (ASCP or AMT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receives, logs–in, and assigns accession numbers to specimens from nursing floors and outpatient sites.
• Prepares specimens per Reference Laboratory requirements, centrifuges and separates specimens as needed.
• Maintains work area, restocks supplies, and notifies supervisor of low stock.
• Scans and enters test orders into the LIS; records and reports results to appropriate locations.
• Answers phones and relays reports to nursing floors, physicians and offsite facilities.
• Generates and distributes laboratory reports; faxes external inquiry reports when required.
• Records daily temperatures of refrigerators and freezers; notifies supervisor of deviations.
• Adheres to Universal precautions and safety procedures; uses PPE when handling specimens.
• Trains new employees and assists in orientation; acts as a resource to staff.
• Adapts to technological advances and maintains a culture of safety.
