The Department of Neurobiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a full-time, contractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The Research Assistant would work in the lab of Dr. Emily Aery Jones (https://aeryjoneslab.github.io/), whose research investigates the neural physiology of spatial navigation in aging and Alzheimer's disease. This position would begin in January 2026.

Primary Duties

  • Manage inventory and equipment: Submit and track orders. Inventory and restock consumables. Schedule regular maintenance on lab equipment. Help design and maintain physical inventory organization. Help keep lab database records relevant to inventory and equipment up to date.
  • Maintain compliance and safety: Assist with safety inspections. Contribute to writing lab safety protocols. Safely contain hazardous materials.
  • Manage mouse colony: Wean, genotype, and cull. Set up appropriate breeding schemes. Keep lab database records for the mouse inventory up to date.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as assisting with new lab member onboarding, responding to emails from vendors and administrators, and assisting in arranging lab meetings and events.
  • Assist with ongoing experiments. Train mice on behavioral tasks. Provide routine care and monitoring for experimental animals. Conduct initial data processing on video and neural data.
  • May assist with advanced laboratory research activities such as: assembling custom electrophysiological and optogenetic implants, implantation surgery, perfusion and tissue collection, immunohistochemistry and imaging, and neural data analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Experience: None required.

Preferred Experience: Laboratory rodent research experience preferred.

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Skill in rodent care and handling.
  • Ability to learn and assist with experimental procedures. Skill in animal husbandry, rodent behavioral techniques, rodent surgery, and histological techniques preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain digital and physical organization systems. Ability to keep detailed records.
  • Ability to respond in a timely manner to communication. Ability to effectively coordinate work across multiple stakeholders through oral and written communication. Ability to assume personal responsibility for outcomes.
  • Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to work cooperatively with others on multifaceted projects and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.

Hiring Range: $46,350 - $53,620, Commensurate with education and experience
