Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks a Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) to support Northwest Clinics, including Elk River, Andover, and Rogers. The role involves phlebotomy, specimen handling, LIS/HIS data entry, and coordinating tests across sites.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program.
• Three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience or enrollment in MLT/MLS with phlebotomy course.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Successful customer service background in diverse settings.
• Ability to work under stress.
• Independent judgment and manual dexterity.
• BLS certification within 90 days if working in clinic setting.

Responsibilities

• Obtain biological specimens following SOPs.

• Schedule tests/procedures and provide results by LIS/HIS or phone.

Job Overview

Fairview is looking for a Full Time (1.0 FTE) Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) to support the Northwest Clinics, including M Health Fairview Clinic - Elk River, M Health Fairview Clinic - Andover, and M Health Fairview Clinic - Rogers. The primary location and hours for this position are Elk River 8:00-4:30pm, but hours vary between 7:30am and 6:00pm if covering at Andover or Rogers. These are 8-hour shifts. This position includes one 8-hour shift at an Urgent Care location every approximately every 5th Saturday. Schedule is subject to change to meet staffing needs, including floating to other nearby clinics.

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with M Health Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview's goals.

Responsibilities

• Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
• Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.
• Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
• Demonstrates proficiency with point of care testing and/or waived testing.
• May perform EKGs.
• May train others in phlebotomy skills.
• Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including properly identified.
• Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
• Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.
• Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.
• Mentors and teaches students.
• Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Prioritizes assigned work.
• Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.
• Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
• Information processing.
• Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
• Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
• Schedules tests/procedures.
• Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.

Required Qualifications

• High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided. and
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program or
• Completion of three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience or
• Enrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
• Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Demonstrate manual dexterity.
• Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
• Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) certification required when working in clinic setting (not required at Maple Grove Ambulatory Care Center) within 90 Days

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
• Some positions will require reliable transportation.
