Job summary

Fairview Health Services is seeking a Casual Laboratory Care Technician to support lab teams across multiple Minnesota clinic locations, including Andover, Brooklyn Park, and Fridley. The role involves specimen collection, phlebotomy, and point-of-care testing, with shifts between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The LCT provides accurate data entry in LIS/HIS and adapts to varied schedules. The position requires a phlebotomy program, basic life support within 90 days, and strong customer-service skills

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program.
  • Three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy experience or enrollment in an MLT/MLS program with phlebotomy coursework.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience in diverse settings.
  • Ability to work under stress in varying situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity for phlebotomy tasks.
  • Basic Life Support (AHA or Red Cross) certification within 90 days when working in clinic settings.

Responsibilities

  • Follows SOPs to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
  • Collects specimens using proper technique per SOP.
  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates handling needs.
  • Uses effective communication with patients and families.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with point-of-care and waived testing.
  • May perform EKGs.
  • May train others in phlebotomy skills.
  • Ensures specimens are acceptable and properly identified.
  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to labs.
  • Performs daily quality control and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitors inventory and restocks supplies.
  • Mentors students as applicable.
  • Prioritizes work to support optimal patient outcomes.
  • Transports blood and body fluids safely and timely.
  • Schedules tests and enters results in LIS/HIS; documents workflow.
  • Maintains a safe, infection-controlled work environment.

Job Overview

Fairview is seeking a Casual Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) to support our laboratory teams at M Health Fairview Clinic - Andover, M Health Fairview Urgent Care - Brooklyn Park, and M Health Fairview Clinic - Fridley. Shift hours at clinic locations may vary, with start times ranging from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All shifts are typically 8 hours in length. This position requires flexibility to work at multiple clinic locations. Schedules are subject to change based on operational and staffing needs, including floating to other nearby Fairview clinics as needed.

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with M Health Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview's goals.

Responsibilities
  • Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
  • Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.
  • Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with point of care testing and/or waived testing.
  • May perform EKGs.
  • May train others in phlebotomy skills.
  • Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including properly identified.
  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
  • Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Mentors and teaches students.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Prioritizes assigned work.
  • Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.
  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
  • Information processing.
  • Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
  • Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
  • Schedules tests/procedures.
  • Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.
  • Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area. Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Adheres to safety protocols.
  • Follows infection control guidelines.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations.
Required Qualifications
  • High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. • Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided. and
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program or
  • Completion of three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience or
  • Enrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) certification required when working in clinic setting (not required at Maple Grove Ambulatory Care Center) within 90 Days
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
  • Some positions will require reliable transportation.
