LAB ASSISTANT/PATHOLOGY PREP

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Pick up Surgical and Cytology specimens from different areas of the Hospital multiple times during the day. Requires significant walking.
• Document specimen problems as directed and according to policy.
• Register and accession all surgical and cytology specimens.
• Call doctors’ offices, floors, and other departments to obtain or correct patient/specimen information.
• Prepare, stain, and cover slip GYN and NGYN Cytology and occasional frozen section specimens.
• Maintain Thin Prep Processor, centrifuge, stainer, coverslipper, and imaging equipment.
• Monitor supply levels and record keeping.
• Dispose of hazardous chemicals safely.
• Assist in histology lab activities such as pulling slides off stainers, handing out slides, and other basic functions.
• Contribute to the Quality Assurance Program.
• Accurately file slides and blocks as needed.
• Participate in workflow improvements.
• Maintain a clean laboratory space as directed and according to policy.
• Ensure readiness of the Fine Needle Aspiration cart.
• Prepare specimens for any required send-out testing.
• Train new employees.
• Organize supplies and reagents.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.
