A leading company seeks a Laboratory Assistant I to join their Cytogenetics Lab. The position entails coordinating specimen processing and providing exceptional patient service within a dynamic, team-oriented environment. The Edmonton Cytogenetics Laboratory has a dynamic, team based work environment, participating in clinical testing for both inherited and oncological conditions. Here, the successful candidate will work closely with other staff to deliver high quality patient results and participate in process improvement initiatives.As a Laboratory Assistant in our lab, you will be a key player in the lab processes, ranging from specimen reception, process preparation, and administrative duties. As this role is pivotal for cytogenetic testing, the successful individual should have an aptitude for team work, problem solving, and be ambidextrous, remaining flexible and adaptive to accommodate varying workflows.Under the direction of the laboratory supervisor, the successful candidate will support preanalytical processes, initiating and participating in the receiving and accessioning patient samples. This candidate will also champion laboratory quality initiatives and inventory management. The individual will be heavily involved with various processes, acting as a point person for our team. Flexibility of work hours, including off-shift and/or weekends may occasionally be required.
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Competency with Windows-based computer applications (ex. Microsoft Office, database/spreadsheet applications) and mathematical calculations is required. The ability to stand, sit, lift and carry equipment and supplies is a must. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and within a team environment. The individual must have proven effective time management and organizational skills and be a strong team player committed to providing quality patient care. Strong communication skills are a must. To be successful in this role, the candidate must be quality focused and have very good attention to details. The individual must demonstrate excellent problem solving skills, having the ability to prioritize duties and responsibilities according to the situation. Communication and interpersonal skills must enable this individual to build and maintain relationships, facilitate teamwork, resolve conflict and manage change. The successful candidate will represent Genetics & Genomics, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories, in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.
Preferred Qualifications:Clinical experience in a laboratory is preferred, but not a requirement.
