A leading public health team is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I to perform vital specimen processing and testing. This role involves direct interaction with laboratory specimens, adherence to safety protocols, and participation in quality improvement initiatives. Ideal candidates will have a strong educational background in medical laboratory science and communication skills to effectively collaborate within the healthcare team.
As a Laboratory Assistant I, you are part of a public health team responsible performing routine and specialized specimen processing while adhering to laboratory standard operating procedures and laboratory accreditation requirements. Specific accountabilities include: planning and organizing your work responsibilities to receive specimens, performing pre-analytical specimen processing, distribution of specimens for laboratory testing and investigation, operation and maintenance of equipment, assisting with proficiency testing and performing quality control procedures, preparing specimens for storage and external send out, providing customer service support, and assisting with the training of staff and students as required. You will use your knowledge and demonstrated understanding of quality systems to participate in quality control functions and quality improvement activities. You ensure work processes are carried out with patient and staff safety as a priority. You will be required to train to perform Laboratory Assistant I functions in other areas of the lab.
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Graduate from a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent, which includes specimen handling. A combination of related education and experience may be considered. Manual dexterity for manipulation of specimens. Demonstrates strong, adaptive communication skills utilizing a variety of modalities (verbal, active listening, comprehension, reading, and written,) sound judgement with attention to detail and accuracy, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and good judgement, courtesy, and tact in dealing with patients, physicians, and other healthcare workers.
Preferred Qualifications:One-year Beaker CP Lab Processor Result Entry experience. One-year recent Public Health Lab experience. Maintains TDG certification. Ability to work under pressure, in emergency situations, and balance and prioritize numerous demands. Works independently as well as cooperatively, assisting others to promote good teamwork and a positive work environment. Demonstrates flexibility, able to work a variety of shifts and within an environment of change.
