Job description

Job Duties
  1. Assess, access, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing across various sections of Laboratory Medicine.
  2. Handle potentially infectious blood, body fluids, tissues, and other specimens safely, in compliance with regulatory standards.
  3. Evaluate the suitability of patient specimens and reject unacceptable ones according to protocols.
  4. Ensure accuracy and patient safety by matching order and specimen information.
  5. Access and record results via appropriate computer applications.
  6. Assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers correctly.
  7. Verify physician orders, especially when test requests are unclear.
  8. Prepare specimens through centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  9. Deliver specimens to testing areas promptly.
  10. Use laboratory programs to store, locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing.
  11. Maintain logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental duties.
  12. Manage phone inquiries regarding specimen collection, transport, and results.
  13. Assist in training and orienting new employees.
  14. Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  15. Package, order, and refer specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with regulations.
  16. Troubleshoot missing specimens and preanalytical errors.
  17. Maintain equipment and participate in preventative maintenance programs.
  18. Handle supplies properly, notify supervisors of low inventory.
  19. Complete departmental continuing education and competency assessments.
  20. Perform testing processes within scope of duties, completing necessary training and maintaining competency.

Position Details

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Laboratory Assistant I: Less than 1 year of experience; HS diploma or GED.
  • Laboratory Assistant II: Minimum 1 year of experience or equivalent qualifications such as a degree in a related science field or ASCP certification.

Incentives: $5,000 SIGN ON BONUS for eligible candidates working evenings and nights (11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.).

Additional Details
