Job description

Assesses, accessions, and processes patient specimens in preparation for testing across various sections of Laboratory Medicine.

  • Safely handles potentially infectious blood, body fluids, tissues, and other specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Assesses the suitability and acceptability of patient specimens.
  • Rejects unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
  • Matches order information with specimen details to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Accessions and reports results via appropriate computer applications following procedures.
  • Assigns billing numbers, location codes, and physician identifiers correctly.
  • Verifies physician orders when test requests are unclear.
  • Prepares specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  • Delivers prepared specimens to testing areas promptly.
  • Uses laboratory programs to store, locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing.
  • Maintains logs, quality control, disinfection, and departmental duties.
  • Handles phone inquiries regarding specimen collection, transport, and results.
  • Assists in training and orienting new employees.
  • Accesses multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Assists with packaging, ordering, and referring specimens to reference labs, complying with DOT and carrier regulations.
  • Troubleshoots missing specimens and preanalytical errors, reviews courier logs, and manages specimen archives.
  • Maintains equipment, participates in preventive maintenance, and reports issues.
  • Handles supplies, notifies supervisors of low inventory.
  • Completes continuing education and competency assessments.
  • Performs testing within scope as appropriate, completing related training and maintaining competency.

Work is performed in a clinical environment. Employees are accountable for job obligations and policy compliance. This description is not exhaustive; additional competencies may be required based on departmental orientation.

Educational and experience requirements:

Laboratory Assistant I: Less than 1 year of experience; HS diploma or GED.

Laboratory Assistant II: At least 1 year of experience or one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in a related science field, or
  • Enrollment with at least two completed semesters in a related science degree, or
  • ASCP Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification.

Work is typically in a clinical setting. Employees must meet job obligations and organizational policies. Additional skills from departmental orientation are essential.

  • Hiring Incentive: $5,000 SIGN ON BONUS for eligible candidates (Evenings and Nights).
  • Shift: 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
