Job summary

Caltech is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Technician to perform routine animal care and support veterinary procedures in one or more animal facilities. This is an Essential Reporting position with required on-campus presence.

Responsibilities include husbandry, safety adherence, ANIMAL health monitoring, sample collection, injections, and coordination of shipments, with strong documentation and log maintenance. Applicants should meet basic qualifications and be prepared for ongoing training.

Qualifications

• Two years or more of related experience.
• Must pass pre-employment medical clearance.
• Willing to participate in Occupational Health program including vaccinations and routine TB testing as required.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine animal husbandry, including cleaning, feeding, and watering.
• Follow safety, infection control, and policy guidelines.
• Set up breeding pairs; check plugs; wean, sex, and tail biopsy rodents; environmental enrichment.
• Collect biological samples and administer injections; receive and house new animal shipments.
• Communicate observations to research personnel and OLAR staff.
• Report sick or distressed animals to veterinary staff.
• Participate in veterinary treatment in consultation with the veterinarian.
• Perform euthanasia per AVMA and IACUC guidelines.
• Maintain accurate records for animal health, breeding, and inventory.
• Maintain animal housing and support areas; stock supplies.
• Maintain equipment; report malfunctions.
• Participate in training and continuing education.
