Job summary

Caltech is seeking an Animal Care Technician to perform routine husbandry, feeding, and monitoring of laboratory animals. You will follow safety policies, coordinate specialized procedures, and maintain detailed health and housing records.

The role requires adherence to AVMA and IACUC guidelines and participation in ongoing training. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to lift and move supplies and equipment as needed.

Qualifications

• Must pass pre-employment medical clearance and participate in an Occupational Health program (vaccinations/TB testing).
• Demonstrate effective oral and written communication and organizational skills.
• Maintain legible logs and records in accordance with department procedures.
• Perform duties following department policies and confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine animal husbandry duties: cleaning, feeding, and watering laboratory animals.
• Follow safety, infection control, and AVMA/IACUC guidelines.
• Coordinate specialized procedures (breeding, weaning, tail biopsy) as assigned.
• Observe and report animal health and welfare to veterinary staff promptly.
• Maintain accurate records of health, breeding, and inventory.
• Operate and maintain equipment (ventilated racks, HEPA workstations) and report malfunctions.
• Participate in training and continuing education per federal guidelines.
