Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Nursing is seeking a Surgical Technologist to assist with surgical procedures, provide patient care, and support equipment and instrument management under the supervision of a registered nurse. The role emphasizes aseptic technique, teamwork, and education for new staff.

Position includes a $5,000 sign-on bonus, night shift rotation (23:00–07:30) and on-campus location at John Pappajohn Pavilion (JPP).

Qualifications

• Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist.
• Direct patient care experience in Labor & Delivery is preferred.
• Experience in a healthcare environment and strong written communication skills are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
• Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
• Demonstrates understanding of asepsis principles and communicates breaks in aseptic technique.
• Provides care for equipment, instruments, supplies and implants.
• Assists with documentation under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
• Acts as primary preceptor to orient new staff and student technologists to scrubbing duties.
• Participates in unit staff meetings and in-service programs.
• Performs other special projects as assigned.
